A Shadow of Things to Come?

Palestinian interim leader Mahmoud Abbas yesterday called Israel the "Zionist enemy" after an Israeli tank killed seven Palestinians, four of them young brothers, in a northern Gaza strawberry field.

The violence and Abbas' increasingly harsh words raised questions on both sides about whether the presidential election on Sunday, which Abbas is widely expected to win, will lead to a resumption of peace talks. Abbas' image has been as a moderate peacemaker. - S.S. Nelson/KnightRidder
We will see if his rhetoric is only that of the campaign variety, or if in fact, groups like Hammas can take solice in his election. We find it interesting that there has not been much opposition or violence leading up to the expected victory. Could this be a sign that a sublte "wink" is in place for groups like Hammas and Hezbullah? - zzb
