ScrappleFace: Bush Sends Carter to Monitor Pope's Peace
ScrappleFace: Bush Sends Carter to Monitor Pope's Peace: (2005-04-08) -- In an effort to atone for his failure to include former President Jimmy Carter in the official U.S. papal funeral delegation, President George Bush announced today that Mr. Carter would head a contingent of monitors tasked with assuring that the pope rests in peace.Good one Scott.. So why didn't he attend the funerals of the two Popes (Pope John Paul I and Pope Paul VI) who died during his administration? He had the opportunity to be first. Or did he think it was not PC at the time... hmmm. Maybe he can can do a better job of "Peace Monitoring" than he did at freeing the Iranian Hostages in 1979.
'Although President Carter's previous peacemaking and peacekeeping efforts may not have achieved the desired longterm results,' said White House spokesman Scott McClellan, 'we believe he has a high probability of success given the pope's current position.'
The White House also said it would reserve a seat on any future Air Force One flights to Vatican City funerals for Mr. Carter, 'because he didn't get to go to the two papal funerals which happened during his own presidency.'"
