Review: New Release of ScribeFire 1.4.1

ScribeFire 1.4.1 by Christopher Finke was released today by scribefire.com (previously Performancing for Firefox). It's a great plug in for Firefox users that actively blog. Several GUI enhancements were made, mostly cosmetic, to the previous revision but it does represent a commitment by Christopher Finke to continuously improve one of the best tools for the active blogger who relies on the awesome Firefox browser as a publishing work horse.

ScribeFire (previously "Performancing for Firefox") is a full-featured blog editor that integrates with your browser and lets you easily post to your blog. You can drag and drop formatted text from pages you are browsing, take notes, and post to your blog.

Some of the enhancements over the last revision:

  • Navbar is now collapsed by default
  • Rotated nav bar toggle to show direction of flyout
  • Shrunk sidebar toggle to match navbar toggle
  • Restyled publish button to be more consistent
  • Moved navbar and sidebar toggles into the top row the editor to save space
  • Categories have been relabeled as tags
  • Added confirmation to post deletion
  • Blog list now uses radio buttons
  • Added link to each blog in blog list
  • Removed “View this blog” link from bottom of editor
  • Put blogs, tags in groupboxes
  • Moved “add/edit blog” button into groupbox
  • Moved “add tag” button into groupbox
  • Fixed bug where all spaces were being encoded as
  • Added Strong, Em buttons to editor
  • Fixed blockquote button
  • Added Dutch translation
There are some additional enhancements we would like to see. A close window button in the upper right part of the screen would be the first on our list. The code is xml compatible and is fine for most cross over applications. There are some bugs reported however when working with embedded Feedburner links and using certain API like Digg in active posts that do some quirky things with the DIV statements but they are tolerable.

Again this is a great tool for the active blogger. The developer has also set up a user forum rather recently so it will remain to be seen how well the forum will be moderated and whether or not users will find it useful. We are hopeful as this is a great add on for the Firefox browser when configured properly.
